Starting in Taluka in Uttarakhand, the trail for this trek takes you through vast meadows and thick forests of Uttarakhand and into the gorgeous valley of the Gods (Har ki Dun) finally culminating on the other side in Himachal Pradesh.
The Borasu Pass trek not only takes you through the most beautiful of landscapes including camping at the gorgeous Har Ki Doon (valley of the Gods) but also provides spectacular views of peaks such as Swargarohini (6,252M), Bandurpunch (6,316M) and Black Peak (6,387M). The beauty and the challenge of the terrain along with the company of these reverential peaks are enough to inspire the mountaineer in you. Borasu Pass has some of the most stunning campsites. You get to camp out in vast meadows on flat land, spend a night in the valley of Gods (Har ki Doon) and also test your flexibility on higher camps as you ‘try’ to sleep on uneven, titled land with rocks lined like traffic cones used to practice driving. If the campsites are so fun, imagine the humour of the trail!
Har ki Dun is one of the most popular trails in Garhwal Himalayas, and with good reason. That said the trek to Har ki Dun is a mere touch-and-go. It introduces you to the valley and brings you right back. The Borasu Pass trek, on the other hand, gives you the opportunity to immerse yourself in its beauty as you camp in the valley for a night. Har ki Dun valley is gorgeous to say the least. With an abundance of fauna housed by colourful birds, surrounded by splendid peaks, Har ki Dun is one of the most beautiful all-season treks in the Himalayas. Borasu Pass trek gives you the opportunity to continue on this exquisite but popular hanging valley in Garhwal Himalayas, Har ki Dun, onto the lesser explored route to the pass which connects Tons Valley in Uttarakhand with Baspa Valley in Himachal Pradesh. It being an extension of one of the most beautiful trails, is only one of half a dozen reasons you should consider this trek as your next adventure!
While popular trails tend to feel a bit busy, the crowds of the two-legged sort start to thin out after the campsite right before Har ki Dun. Given that Borasu Pass is amongst one of the lesser explored treks and a bit higher up on the difficulty scale, don’t be surprised if you find yourself walking all alone, owning the landscape, and cannot see any sign of human life beyond the valley of Har ki Dun. You will not be spared the masses though; they are just of a different kind! The traffic jams you are likely to encounter on these routes are cows going about their business for the day as you try to squeeze through the crowds of them on these narrow trails.
The trail of Borasu Pass takes you through all kinds of beauty and color palettes. From the million colours of the flora and fauna to the million shades of reds, blues, browns and everything in between of the rocky terrain to a hundred thousand shades of light and shadow playing on the pristine white snow. The burst of colours at Taluka, to the hues of Seema which make you feel warm stripping the cold air off some of its power, the trail is rich in a variety of leaves and bushes - the valley a messy wardrobe of colourful flowers scattered on the ground in no specific order. After the bright turquoise blue of the Morinda Tal, the valley changes colour – now donning a textured brown robe. This trek through the high-mountain pass is a complete 360-degree ride. Starting from greens leading into browns spilling into whites it takes a turn-around after the pass, to go from whites to browns to eventually reach the lush green valley by the Baspa river into Chitkul in the Kinnaur district of Himachal Pradesh.
From the soft mushy grounds to the dry and rocky terrain to the wet and cold land, Borasu Pass has got campsites of all kinds waiting to be explored and experienced. You will spend nights to the music of the flowing river at lower camps moving on to spending nights in the company of eerie silence on the upper slopes of the mountain - sometimes fighting the sharp rocks below and at other times struggling to keep dry on the cold and wet landscape.
After spending three days on a dry and rocky terrain with no vegetation, to be welcomed to the sight of golden spread across the entire landscape in the form of Bhojpatra trees, is absolutely enthralling. On our first trip there, we could hardly contain our glee when we heard the crispy yellow leaves of entire mountains full of Bhojpatra trees make music in the air. Walking through thick, golden forests of Bhojpatra is extremely refreshing after spending days in the cold terrain.
If you like your treks ‘on the rocks’, Borasu Pass should definitely be on the top of your list! After you cross the lush green valley of Har ki Dun, it is all rocks. Three long and arduous days of navigating your way through rocks of all sizes, shapes and textures. The trail thick with boulders as big as dreams season the landscape to give you a deeper flavour of the geography. Three days of existing in this rocky terrain and it wouldn’t be surprising if you find yourself trying to remember how regular folks in regular times, manage to walk on flat land!
