Nestled in the quiet corners of Chikmagalur, this weekend trek to Ballalarayana Durga is a gateway to the paradise that the Western Ghats really is. This trail is a combination of two treks, Ballalarayana Durga Fort and Bandaje Falls, which means you cover both the attractions in one go!

( Best Treks Near Bangalore)

Ballalarayana Durga is an ancient fort with its origins traced to the 17th century. It was built by King Veera Ballala I. Ahead of the fort is Bandaje Falls, cascading down more than 300 M from its snout. The falls are majestic and in full flow during the monsoons. These elements make the trek packed with history, adventure and natural beauty, making it an exciting choice for trekking enthusiasts.

This article lays down all the information pertaining to the Ballalarayana Durga - Bandaje Falls trek and is your go to guide when planning this trail!

The Ballalarayana Durga - Bandaje Falls Trail

The starting point of the trail is 3 kms away from Durgadahalli in Chikmagalur. It is fairly easy to find on Google Maps. You can map it to ‘Raani Jhari Edge Point Parking Spot’. The trail starts just a little ahead of the parking lot. A mud path leads the way to the trail. You will see the path diverting to either side. Take the right turn to arrive at the Rani Jhari view point. A short ascent will take you to the edge, giving you panoramic views of the Rani Jhari cliff along with the Kudremukh National Park.

A makeshift barricade and a forest department board indicate the start of the trail. You can see Ballalarayana Durga fort on your left. The forest section of the trail starts from here. About 200 M from here, you will arrive at a Y junction or what is typically called a ‘fork’. Take the trail on your right. There are two Y junctions you will encounter in the forest sections, always remember to take the trail on the right.

Further down this trail you will come across a rock section with unevenly cut steps. Climb the steps to continue on the trail. The trail here is truly magical with wilderness taking over every inch of your surroundings. This part of the trail is a bit steep and can be slippery during monsoon.

Once you climb the rock and climb ahead, you will arrive at a clearing with views of the fort. It can be a little difficult to spot given that there is very little of it left.

Continue on the trail into the forest. The path here gradually ascends and is also slippery in the landslide prone portions. A trekking pole will be of great assistance here. Please note that this trail is filled with leeches and you might want to carry some salt or wear gaiters for protection. Maintain the trail to the right throughout this section.

Around 200 M from here, you will arrive at another clearing. From here begins your final ascent to the fort. The ascent is gradual and not too difficult. Once you reach the fort, take some time to explore the ruins and soak in the magnificent views of the valleys and mountains around you. The cloud cover during the monsoon makes it even more beautiful!

Make your way back down to the second clearing from where you started your final ascent. From here, You will find a deviation on your left which takes you into the grasslands. This trail will take you to Bandaje Falls.

The trail is a contrast to the earlier landscape and takes you through expansive lush green grasslands that will leave you mesmerised. After trekking close to 700 M on this trail, you will reach a section with heavy winds blowing in all directions. Ensure you have yourself grounded to the trail with trekking poles for the winds can sweep you off your feet in the monsoon months!

After a long walk for close to 2.5 hours through the grasslands, the trail starts to descend. Start your descent and upon reaching a patch of thick vegetation, you can hear the gushing sound of the water from the Bandaje Falls.

As you arrive at the snout of the waterfall, you can see the water gushing through for more than 300 M! Be extremely careful here and do not bend forward to peek without any support. It is advisable to lie on your stomach and peek down at the waterfall.

The views of the valleys in the distance are astounding. Take a moment to soak in these views with the sound of water gushing in the background. Munch on some snacks and hydrate yourself before heading back. It is the same route back to the starting point. Certain sections can be slippery so ensure you have good trekking shoes and a trekking pole to give you maximum grip and support.

This is one of the few trails in the Western Ghats that can be done in the monsoons. The grasslands and forests are lush green in colour, enhancing the colour grading of the landscaping! However, the trail is enjoyable till the end of winter and can be attempted during any of the months between July and March. The post monsoon winter months offer panoramic views as the clouds clear out, making way for the perfect scenery of the Kudremukh National Park.

Avoid doing this trek in the summer months as the temperatures are high and the trail can be dry and unpleasant.
