5 Reasons Why Nag Tibba Is A Great Trek For Beginners

You've been hearing the word ‘trekking’ for quite some time now, whether through Bollywood films or on social media. Finally, you've decided to take the plunge and embark on a small trek to start your journey. As you begin searching the web for options, you become overwhelmed and confused by the choices available. For those in the southern regions, options seem endless. There are numerous single-day hiking possibilities in and around Pune and Bangalore that require minimal planning—just pack your lunch and go. However, if you're located in the northern parts of India and are planning a hiking trip in the Himalayas, your options are limited due to the fact that for anything worthwhile, the base point is at least an overnight journey from Delhi.

If this sounds like a plight you might be experiencing, we have a trek which could serve your have-limited-time-but-need-to-escape-in-search-of-endless-beauty needs perfectly!

Nag Tibba is a weekend adventure which demands little time in exchange for so much in return. The important question then to ask is: Is the Nag Tibba trek suitable for beginners?

The answer is not only ‘yes’, but it's also perfect for beginners. Allow us to explain why!

1. Proximity to Delhi

Let’s just admit that this fast paced life has sure made time a scarce commodity. Everything needs to happen on the weekends, whether it's shopping, outings, spending time with family, or basically anything outside of work. If you're living in and around Delhi and have grown tired of routine visits to malls and theaters, embarking on the Nag Tibba trek is the perfect way to begin your journey of exploring the mountains. The trek starts from Pantwari, which is 90 km from Dehradun. Catching an 11:00 PM bus from Delhi allows you to reach Dehradun by 5:00 AM the following morning. From there, a cab ride gets you to Pantwari by 9:00 AM. If you start on a Friday night, you can commence your trek by 9:00 AM on Saturday morning.

The minimal planning required, easy access points and point to point journeys ensure that the nagging feeling of being overwhelmed that accompanies any new experience is kept safely at bay!

2. Trek Duration

A weekend trek, the journey to Nag Tibba summit can be completed in two to three days, depending on how challenging you want it to be. As a beginner, doubt may linger in your mind—can you really do it? In this case, the 3-day itinerary starting from Pantwari is ideal. While you can also start a 2-day trek from Thatyur, it might not be the best choice due to the steep uphill climb until Nag Mandir. By the time the view opens up, you're likely to be exhausted. Additionally, water is only available at one point when you're already close to your camping spot for the day. Following the Thatyur itinerary means camping at Nag Mandir, then summiting the next day and reaching Patwari by day's end.

3. Gentle Terrain

The terrain from Pantwari to Nag Tibba summit is gently sloped, with no steep sections lasting more than 5 to 10 minutes. The absence of these steep climbs allows trekkers, particularly beginners, to fully appreciate the beauty surrounding them. Beginners tend to be a bit less patient than experienced trekkers, often seeking swift rewards for their hiking efforts. Nag Tibba offers this reward. After a 2-3 hour hike, you'll reach Nag Mandir, where a 180-degree view of the Higher Himalayas awaits. Nag Mandir, a stunning camping site, is enveloped by Rhododendron forests on one side and Deodar forests on the other. Sunsets here rival those from other camping sites in the higher Himalayas.

4. A Holistic Trekking Experience

Nag Tibba provides a taste of all that longer treks offer, from jungle trails to snow and incredible views of India's highest peaks (albeit in a shorter timeframe). When beginning in Pantwari, the first day's trek takes you mainly through Rhododendron forests. After Nag Mandir, or just before it, the path leads through ankle-deep snow, sometimes even knee-deep. Upon reaching the summit, you're treated to views of Nanda Devi, India's highest peak, as well as Bandar Poonch and others. Notably, Nag Tibba forms a circular trek if planned appropriately. A circular route offers a more enriching experience than retracing the same path, as the landscape differs on the return journey, keeping you awed throughout.

5. Additional Assurance: just in case you needed it

For all the reasons mentioned earlier, Nag Tibba stands as an excellent trek for beginners, ensuring most individuals can complete it without major issues. When you're just embarking on your journey into the unexplored mountains and are unaccustomed to remote areas, concerns about needing medical attention or returning home for emergencies might arise. In the case of Nag Tibba, you have that option; should things deviate from the plan, you can easily head back to Pantwari, even in the middle of the night. Small huts are situated where the jungle trail begins, reachable within an hour from Nag Mandir.

So, this winter, pack your bags and set out for Nag Tibba without apprehension. It's completely manageable and well within your grasp from all aspects, whether it's time or your own physical capabilities.
